2001 Two Hands Sophie’s Garden Shiraz

2001 Two Hands Sophie's Garden ShirazVW: Recent vintages of Two Hands single vineyard bottlings have been somewhat disappointing because of their sweet, candied taste. I was quite impressed by this 2001 Sophie’s Garden Shiraz a few years back and now wonder if the older vintages were really better… or just my palate have changed.

Showing leather, plum, vanilla oak nose, which is quite deep and expressive. Matured palate with dark fruits especially blue berries, plums… deep and not jammy. Showing just a little sherry component and slight bitterness towards the end. A little short given the amount of fruits it has. Not complex but tasty. Will not improve further. This did tasted better than some recent vintages but more is expected at this price. 91 (April, 2009)

AC: First impression of this wine was the aroma, immediately bringing me back the memories of the soy sauce I only occasionally meet. It also has a hint of some green. Slightly sweet, but comfortable mouth feel in the palate. The green remains in the taste. I do notice there is no tannin, and leading to a very short finish. This unique Shiraz is definitely better than the other Gardens I’ve tried in a tasting 2 years ago but as Vincent suggested, just not too pleasing with the value. 90
