1998 Louis Jadot Gevrey Chambertin Clos Saint Jacques
VW: Clos Saint Jacques is a great premier cru in Gevrey Chambertin. The wine is usually quite masculine with good structure. But the best example would not simply sacrifice elegance for this. Jadot makes pretty good CSJ but this 1998 is probably a weaker example. Color is quite advanced, tawny ruby. Rather old looking for a 1998. Toasty oak, wet earth, pepper mint coming from glass. Medium bodied, rather spicy for a burgundy. As it sit longer, more red fruits showed up. It performed best about an hour out of the bottle. Smooth, not much tannis left. The finish was nice and long, showing mostly dried cherry. I believe this had better times and now is lacking fruits to make it more pleasurable. Drink up. 90 (May, 2009)
