1998 Chapel Hill The Vicar
VW: After the last shiraz, I just wanted to have another mature Australian wine and what a surprise this one brought.
Complex on the nose, sweet dark berry, subtle vanilla oak, some tobacco ash… when you find complexity on nose, you know you are in for something special. Big, full and smooth palate saturated with dark fruits. Sweet at times, then almost a salty sensation from maturity on others. Very ripe fruits with well resolved tannins. Finished with good amount of acid and spiciness. This is a full throttle red hitting it’s prime. Made to impress although personally I prefer something more elegant. 93 (April, 2009)
